About Depth Counseling

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy services in Chicago, IL and Austin & Houston, TX

Founded in 2017, Depth Counseling is a group psychotherapy practice, offering long-term, psychoanalytic psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families. We work in person and by telehealth, with locations in Chicago (the Loop and Ravenswood) and soon in Texas (Austin and Houston). Our primary goal is to help our clients get beneath their presenting symptoms to identify the blocks that hold them back from living their fullest and most rewarding lives. We believe in the transformative power of this work and in the potential for growth at any stage of life.

Depth Counseling

Depth’s Mission

Our mission is to make high-quality, long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy accessible, welcoming, and relatable to the people in our greater community, regardless of any client’s race, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or income level.

We envision a world in which all people have affordable access to high-quality, long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

We are committed to contributing to the greater efforts in society to decolonize and de-stigmatize mental health, including dismantling anti-Black racism and white supremacy. We recognize that these issues are deeply embedded in the work we do as well as the field in which we work.

We proactively challenge the psychoanalytic community’s historical pathologization of the LGBTQIA+ community and are working to bring new understanding, perspectives, and psychoanalytically-informed contributions to the queer community and the psychoanalytic field.

We envision an equitable and just environment where all staff members—especially those who are Black, Indigenous and people of color, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ community—can pursue a safe workplace, training and therapy in the pursuit of professional and personal growth. The strategic growth of Depth Counseling’s practice and staff focuses on prioritizing the recruitment, retention, representation, understanding, and action needed to implement these values actively.

We are committed to integrating best practices and informed policies rooted in our mission, values, and vision. Here are some of the ways we walk our talk as a community, as a practice, and as clinicians:

  • We recruit therapists from a true variety of personal and professional backgrounds.
  • We offer in-house training and scholarship opportunities, so that all staff members can obtain high quality, psychoanalytic training and become leaders in the local community if they choose to.
  • We consult monthly with a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant to hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards of equity and equality and to develop the highest standards for fostering a welcoming, empowering environment.
  • We accept Medicaid and Medicare through Blue Cross Blue Shield Community and MMAI plans, as well as a number of PPO insurance plans. This policy supports and ensures psychotherapeutic treatment is affordable and accessible.
  • We host student interns from local graduate programs, making high quality care available at sliding scale rates.
  • We operate on a “lean” budget, paying our staff as well as possible, so that they can thrive in their own lives, and so that they will choose to stay with our group, offering long-term care to our patients.
