What is online therapy?
Online mental health counseling is also called virtual therapy, e-therapy, teletherapy, or telepsychology. The service of remote therapy is just one category under the umbrella of telehealth services, such as telemedicine and telepsychiatry. Therapists are able to provide individual, couples, and even group therapy over the Internet, which means we can provide clients with easy, safe access to psychotherapy services.
Online therapy is just like regular in-person therapy. You can have a safe, confidential space to share your stress, your fears, and your troubles. You get the chance to feel heard and understood. You have an opportunity to unlock deep personal insights, discover solutions to your challenges, and begin your journey of growth and healing. Furthermore, the research shows that online therapy works just as in-person therapy (see Varker et al., 2018; Glueckauf et al., 2018; Wilson et al., 2017).
The only difference between online therapy and in-person therapy is that instead of meeting in an office together, you meet with your therapist over the Internet via video chat (or over the phone if needed).
Online or over-the-phone therapy can be helpful for addressing a wide range of problems, such as:
- Grief and loss (death of a loved one, loss of career, etc.)
- Relationship issues, marital problems, and loneliness
- Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless
- Stress management
- Parenting issues
- Difficulties with sleep
- Coping with anxiety or worry
- Mood swings and irritability
- Difficulty focusing or feeling motivated
However, some issues are not a good fit for online therapy and are best treated in person. If you are in an immediate crisis (suicidal or homicidal intent, significant self-harm, active substance abuse or eating disorders, etc.), please call emergency services and or other crisis services for immediate assistance. Feel free to contact us to find out if online therapy is a good fit for your needs—we would love to hear from you.

How does online therapy work?
Depth Counseling uses a confidential, secure, HIPAA-compliant platform through Simple Practice for all our video chat sessions. Simple Practice makes it easy for us to connect with just a few clicks without making sacrifices in quality or privacy. Our online counseling sessions are easy to set up and scheduled for your convenience. You can meet with your therapist any time during our usual hours and in the safety and comfort of your home or office, and the sessions go for the same amount of time.
You will need to have a decent internet connection, along with a smartphone or computer with a webcam, in order to do a video chat session through Simple Practice. After you get signed up, you will receive a link via email that will direct you to the video session. All you have to do is click that link a few minutes before your appointment begins, and you and your therapist will be connected shortly. If at any point you are having trouble accessing your session or if you aren’t sure what to do next, please let us know.

When should I choose online therapy and mental health services?
Online therapy is a preferable option for many people looking for mental health services as it offers flexibility and convenience. If you’re looking for a safe and supportive space to talk about your concerns, you can choose online therapy. It’s a good fit for people experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or stress. This is also helpful if you feel more comfortable talking about personal issues from the privacy of your own home.
What should I do to prepare for online therapy with a therapist?
Find a quiet, private space in your home where you won’t be interrupted by anyone. Make sure you have reliable access to the Internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone. If you are using a laptop or desktop, use headphones for increased privacy. If possible, make a list of topics you want to discuss and write down any questions you have for your therapist beforehand.
How does scheduling therapy appointments online work?
Here’s the process of scheduling online therapy services with us:
- Contact us to inquire about online therapy.
- If you decide to move forward, you will be signed up and receive a link via email.
- The link will direct you to the video session.
- Click the link a few minutes before your appointment to connect with your therapist. If you have any trouble accessing your sessions or have any questions, you can contact us again.
Is online therapy as effective as traditional, in-person therapy?
Yes, research shows that online therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person therapy for a variety of mental health concerns. This is because online video sessions allow you to have all the same benefits of traditional therapy, like a safe and confidential space to talk to a qualified mental health professional from the comfort and convenience of your home.
